Cosmic Vision (Violet Redressed)

"Cosmic Vision" - Pro Tech

Violet has a very weird kind of backstory.  Not in the story itself, but how it formed.  I've had a pair of characters for a LONG time, since high school really.  They've grown and shaped over the years, but have always been with me.  They are two men who meet at a survivors of violence group meeting, and wind up falling in love - Tobias and Lucas.  Tobias witnessed the murder of his parents by a serial killer who had once been his psychiatrist father's patient, and got shot in the head himself, but survived.  Lucas comes from two parents who were meth cooks and dealers.  Not like Breaking Bad - like, normal gross meth cooking where you're just making it from shit under your sink.  He grew up without water, heat, or love.  He was constantly abused and forced to help cook meth, and didn't learn how to read until he was 12.  He also saw his mother kill his father in a drug-induced rage and had to help bury the body.

Violet comes into this story because she is Tobias's niece.  Within the confines of their story, she's a 4 year old girl who is the daughter of Tobias's 'brother', Tommy.  Tommy is actually his cousin, but when Tobias's parents were murdered, he was adopted by his mother's twin sister, and lived with them.  Tommy and Tobias look very much alike because their mothers were twins, so everyone just assumes that they're brothers by blood.  Even at 4 years old, Violet loves outer space, and makes spaceships out of boxes.  All her Barbies are astronauts, and she loves building the ships from Star Wars lego sets.

So, this Violet is the grown version of that child that was a minor character at best, and now is a character in her own right.  She is the creator of the first anti-matter engine - a far more efficient method of travel than our fuel propelled rockets.  Matter and anti-matter collisions create a massive amount of power, enough to take us farther in space than we could have ever expected.  She is also the visionary behind my space travel story, where Maris has improved upon the engine so it can travel even further away from earth, getting very close to light speed.  In that story, Violet is a symbol, a heroine of the human race, and has been dead for a couple of decades.  So she's kind of stuck between two worlds of my own creation
