Animal Hybrids! And beard grooming! Cig and George are bonding over the time it takes in the mirror to style their facial hair. Beard bros. Doc eating an apple! Keaghlan cooking! Self-pity backyard party! (there are lots of those, even more than we ever see, I imagine). Damien is feeling bummed that his partner went home in the Twisted Tree challenge last week, and he feels that he hasn't lived up to his potential. Will he live up to it this week? Find out NEXT!
They all head to the wildlife learning center, which is an animal sanctuary for animals who were either orphaned, zoo-raised, circus-raised, or taken from the black market pet trade, which is a HUGE, and very sad market. These animals do not make good pets! We get to meet some of the people at the sanctuary, and some of the animals. Like Kingston, the baby squirrel monkey, an armadillo, a porcupine, a red fox, a coatimundi, and a tawny owl. Plus many others. There are many animals to choose from among all the rescued critters that live here, and they have to make a hybrid of two. It's kind of funny that even with all the choices, Cig and George both choose an armadillo and an alligator. Arma-gator! The armadillo is actually fuzzy under all its plating, and it talks about the 'ferocity' of the alligator, and goes to a pic of it just sitting there smiling. I just gotta say that when they talk about some of the peoples' choices, the pic of the Fennec Fox is TOO CUTE OMG.
Back in the lab, Stella's having big issues with her kinkajou and the Serval hybrid. Drew is doing a squirrel monkey and red fox. He says it would be the perfect animal because it would be clever like a fox, and have the quick hands of a monkey. I'm pretty sure a monkey is actually more clever than a fox, Drew. Mr. Westmore immediately shuts down Stella's sculpt, especially the nose. She's just not feeling this challenge. Mr. Westmore is also worried about George, who is doing a quadraped alli-dillo, where the bottom jaw is on the model's face. If it goes wrong, it will REALLY go wrong. Cig's sculpture is looking AWESOME. I think it's my fave so far.
Keaghlan is using vacuu-form eyes since the kinkajou has really big eyes. But she wants to give it the lynx paint job, which I'm thinking might look kind of lame, but we'll see. Doc wants to open his mold, but it's too late in the day (same as last week). On Day 2, Stella rips her face off the life cast, and redoes the face. Again. She's in big shit trouble. Everything that's happening to her is a recipe for disaster. Sasha is molding feathers on the face, rather than laying. It actually looks pretty cool. But I think it could get wrecked if she doesn't paint it right. Dina is doing a fun fur suit, and she doesn't get the ginger color she wanted, and only gets white. Drew stole it all, the bastard. So, she's got to paint the whole suit, which is cutting into her time. Damien's never worked with feathers or fun fur, so he's a little antsy about how it will turn out, but it's looking cool. George is making his armadillo plating with L-200 foam (that black stuff that they use pretty much in every episode since the very first one)
Drew decides to save time to mold his by using hydra-cal mold instead of ultra-cal, which they normally use. He's never used hydra-cal, and then he realizes he's fucked up. You're only supposed to use one batch of the stuff since it dries so quickly, and if you use multiple batches, it will delaminate, which is where the layers break apart because they dried at different speeds. Ruh-roh.
Okay, I just gotta point out at this point, they have some new background music that sounds like a final battle in a video game, or the contestants are all about to go fight Apollo Creid. Keaghlan is painting her bubble eyes like a cat's eye, and they look soooooo lame. Drew goes to open his hydra-cal mold, and he's saved. It worked! Sasha's upper-body looks cool, but she just has leggings for the legs, and she's really worried about that. Stella has even more trouble because the color she painted her face doesn't match the body AT ALL. The stars are against her this week.
In last looks, Stella runs out of brown airbrush paint (man, did a gypsy curse her this week). George is also having issues with the lower jaw falling off his model's face, since his model is allergic to telesus, and that's the stickier glue.
Glenn looks a lot happier than normal - I don't know if that makes me feel good or not.
First up is Drew's red fox/squirrel monkey:
It's okay, I suppose. The hard black line around the muzzle looks kind of weird, but that's what the squirrel monkey coloring looks like. The hair work is decent. This is one that I liked more upon the second viewing of the episode.
Dina's red fox/prairie dog:
The eyes are creeping me out. Dina really impressed me in the first episode, so much so that I picked her as my horse this season, but she's really been underwhelming me since then. I don't love this one - at all.
Keaghlan's kinkajou/eurasian lynx:
I really hate this one. Actually, I didn't like too many this week, but I especially hate this one. The eyes are just soooooo bad, and the face paint is brutal.
Cig's 'Arma-gator':
This one's my fave, hand's down. I love the profile, and it looks so imposing and quite scary. There are some REALLY cool shapes in the jaw, mouth, and gullet.
Damien's tawny owl/coatimundi:
The suit turned out awesome. He also has big googly eyes in his character, but he was smart to make them darker, so they don't look nearly as lame as Keaghlan's.
George's 'alli-dillo':
The chest/underside is very Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the paint job. The face shape is cool, but it's a hard line for the eye to follow, so it looks a bit messy. Mind you, not nearly as much of a clusterfuck as some of the others.
Sasha's tawny owl/bobcat:
The molded feathers actually turned out really good, and the melding of the cat nose is also really well done. Sasha hates the leggings, but she's got some definite talent that she's apparently unaware of. Reminds me a bit of Miranda from seasons 2 and 5.
Jason's fennec fox/red-tailed hawk:
Oh yeah... Jason. After the design process, he wasn't even shown at all, LOL. It's passable. Maybe that's why they didn't concentrate on it. It's not as bad as some of the really bad ones. I dig the way the skull shape goes up into the fox ears.
Stella's kinkajou/serval:
Yikes. There doesn't really need to be more said about it. It's bad. She knows it's bad.
Doc's bald eagle/squirrel monkey:
Oof. Okay, this one SUCKS. It looks like a really bad Ron Perlman mask with a Homer Simpson muzzle on it. At least Doc is aware that it's bad.
Rachael's fennec fox/coatimundi:
I find the paint on the face muddy, but there is something about the features that looks a bit more plausible than some of the ones up there.
When the judges go and look, I just gotta say how much I love when British people, like Lois, say 'pussycat'. We've got Sasha, Keaghlan, Damien, Doc, Stella, and Cig as the best and worst. Everyone else is safe.
Sasha is up first, and the judges love this one. The paint is good. Sasha doesn't think she did good because of the leggings. The judges think it's amazing, but note that she needs more confidence. This one is the one with the googly eyes that looks the best, since they're gloss black, like how many animals' eyes are.
Keaghlan is next, and it's not good. They say it's too cartoony. Keaghlan agrees. I think it would be a scary cartoon.
Damien's up, and you can tell he's worried since he's been in the bottom twice already. But they love his. They're SO impressed at his fur and feather work, especially since he's a virgin at it. And we see a feather transition sculpted into the arm for the first time that is REALLY cool.
Doc is next, and this isn't good. God, I can't even look at his, I hate it so much.
Stella's is also brutal, and she's also aware of its terribleness.
Cig's up, and they love his. Rightly so. This thing is so cool, and it actually looks like it would live in Australia because it looks so menacing.
My pick for winner is Cig, but it's Damien that wins. I was very surprised, considering Damien's was my third fave of the top 3.
Out of the bottom 3, they're all pretty hideous, but I picked Doc to go home, and I was right. Doc bids adieu after having tried out for every season, but he didn't think he'd make it this far.
