Gotham - Pilot (SPOILERS)

SPOILERS

So, last night was like... the night that EVERYTHING came back on TV.  I'm sure that your fave show was in there somewhere.  Big Bang Theory came back, Forever started up with the dude who played Horatio Hornblower (I actually REALLY liked that show, and will definitely tune in again).  The Voice came back (I watch that with my family), and my most anticipated show of the year had its pilot - Gotham.

Before going into watching Gotham, what I was hoping for was a show that had the feel of the comic book Gotham Central (find it in trade paperback - even if you're NOT a comic book fan).  Gotham Central focused on the regular police officers of Gotham City, and what they had to deal with, living in such a cesspool of a city.  And sometimes Batman would show up.  It was very 'Homicide: Life On The Street', which is still one of the best shows that ever aired, IMO.

This won't be a blow-by-blow like my other reviews, since I'll have to see how the show goes, and if I'm going to continue reviewing it, but I was very impressed.  The casting choices were excellent, and we saw familiar cop faces like Bullock and Montoya.  Actually, I think we saw almost EVERY familiar face.

That's the bad part of the show.  I felt that a lot of these characters were just there to make fanboys go "Oh, it's Whoever!"  The one that bugged me the most was 'Ivy'.  If you're a Batman fan of even casual proportions, you know that her name isn't Ivy, but Pamela Isley.  It was just so shoehorned.  Another one that felt like that, but that I LOVED, was Edward Nygma, who actually works at the police station as some sort of CSI kinda dude.  He was totally that adork-able nerd who gets really excited about his findings, but the 'cool kids' think he's lame.  He didn't belong there in theory, but I LOVE YOU.

Also, the casting choice for Oswald Cobblepot was great.  They took an actor with an already aquiline face and added the broken capillary makeup on his nose to make it look even MORE beaky.  And Jada Pinkett-Smith as Fish Mooney taught us how to beat someone down while looking fabulous.  Donal Logue also stole the show as the unlovable Harvey Bullock.

And of course, the murder of the Waynes was front and center.  We also had kid Selina Kyle (Cat Girl soon to be Woman) witness it.  It seems that they're going to handle the murder of the Waynes a little differently than the comic book.  I don't know if it's still going to be Joe Chill in the end, but it's a much bigger conspiracy this time around, creating a mob war.  It's like the first drop that disturbs the seemingly calm waters, and creates a much larger storm.

I'll definitely be tuning in next week.  Sound off on what you guys thought.
