SPOILERS
We start the show with a Foundation Challenge at the beach. They're riffing on the idea of the Hindu Holy Festival (also known as The One Where You Chuck Colored Powder At Each Other). They're to make a character that represents spring, much like the Holy Festival ushers in the new season. But, they can't use brushes or any of their usual tools. Only the colored powder and their fingers. So, they all have a good time getting really messy and chucking powder at their models (and each other). The Champions will judge this challenge for immunity, but they won't be told who did which character, so there won't be any bias. Stephanie wins immunity, and she's ecstatic because she was in the bottom last week.
For the Spotlight Challenge, they head to the reveal stage, and the contestants are kind of nervous because this is where people get eliminated. Instead, we meet Miss Venezuela, who is Miss Universe, and find out that the Spotlight Challenge is Miss Intergalactic, an alien beauty pageant. So, each contestant gets the name of a real galaxy, and has to create an alien beauty queen from there. Emily is about to pee her pants, she's so excited about this challenge. And of course, the male contestants are like "Dur, I don't know how to do beauty makeup!" EVERY SEASON! Just one season, I'd like zero male contestants to be scared of doing beauty makeup.
Kelly wants to do an arachnid kind of alien with multiple eyes for the Sombrero Galaxy, but Anthony isn't that thrilled about it. Multiple eyes usually doesn't equal pretty. So she's brought to tears because now she's completely lost on concept. Since the Sombrero Galaxy is so bright, she wants a cave dwelling kind of creature, so decides to go with tentacles in the back of the head. More underwater than cave, but okay. Anthony's other remaining member, Ben, is also doing a multiple eyes sort of thing, so they may be in trouble this week. Ben has the Andromeda Galaxy, and wants to go for a kind of pointing look with a trillium kind of eye shape in the center of the head. Errr... But, he also brings up the first ever '4 piece mold' animation to show how a 4 piece mold actually would fit together.
Darla wanted to do a very asymmetrical style in the back of her head for the Sculptor Galaxy, which is a spiral like the Milky Way. But Laura points out that symmetry is what makes people beautiful, so Darla decides to go with the design in the sides of head to retain symmetry, which retains beauty. Stephanie gets the Tadpole Galaxy, so she's doing a tadpole kind of character with a tail coming down the back of her head like hair. Julian is using the color from the Whirlpool Galaxy as the basis for his beauty queen, which is green in hue. And Laura's other contestant, Emily, is in glitter heaven. She's got the Pinwheel Galaxy, and she's doing gems and glitter everywhere.
Rayce's team also only has 2 members left - Logan and Adam. Adam has the Cigar Galaxy, which is full of stars, so he thinks of something very hot, and goes with a lava theme for a cowl. But the shape of the cowl is kind of like an upswept hairdo. He's also not doing a full face piece, but has little transfers to tie the edges of her face into the cowl. Logan is doing the Comet Galaxy, which is a galaxy that's being pulled apart in a galactic collision. So he wants to have something that's pristine on the face, and going to chaos in the back of the head.
On Application Day, Julian's got a giant-ass dent in his cowl, so he's gotta fix that with a foam patch, where he plasters foam on it and molds it into the shape of what he'd originally done. Kelly is WAY far behind on her paint going into Last Looks. On the reveal stage, we have guest judge Darren Franich (who looks like a kid dressed in his dad's suit), who works for Entertainment Weekly. The winner will get a full page spread in an upcoming issue, which is cool.
Here are the final looks (complete with McKenzie hosting and giving weird facts about each contestant like their intergalactic hobbies and such):
Emily's Miss Pinwheel Galaxy:
Pretty colors! The judges aren't wild on the mouth, but I dig this one. It's safe.
Stephanie's Miss Tadpole Galaxy:
It's okay. Not the worst one, not the best. But Stephanie has immunity, so she won't get eliminated at all.
Ben's Miss Andromeda Galaxy:
Oh hai Voltron. It looks like a 60's anime robot, not a pretty alien.
Adam's Miss Cigar Galaxy:
Very pretty. This was my dad's fave (it was the first time he watched it with us). The profile is really cool. It's a top look.
Logan's Miss Comet Galaxy:
It's very well executed, and it is pretty, but I find the brow looks very masculine.
Julian's Miss Whirlpool Galaxy:
Very simple and elegant. The colors match the galaxy perfectly. You can't even tell that he had that dent issue. This one was my mom's fave.
Kelly's Miss Sombrero Galaxy:
You can tell she ran out of time. The paint is unfinished, and the concept isn't as strong as the other ones.
Darla's Miss Sculptor Galaxy:
My personal fave. So elegant, and I love the dress!
The top looks are Darla, Julian, and Adam. Darla's Miss Sculptor Galaxy wins a crown, and it's cute because the models act it out like it's a real beauty pageant. The bottom looks are both of Anthony's peeps - Kelly and Ben. I expected Ben to go home because I REALLY didn't like his, and he completely missed the mark of the challenge, but Kelly is the one that goes home.
